Big Ben

Big Ben

Alex worked as one of the in-house clockmakers at The Palace of Westminster at the heart of the team which completed the internationally significant restoration of the Great Clock of Westminster, affectionately known as Big Ben. There are over 1000 components in the clock and Alex was in the celebrated and unique position of being on the team that reassembled and maintained each component of this iconic heritage mainstay.

Lord Grimthorpe’s Experimental Regulator

With design by Edmund Beckett Denison, manufacture by Edward Dent, and overseen by Mathew Brock, this historic clock is riddled with creative innovation by the same team that successfully made The Great Clock of Westminster. The metaphorical fingerprints of this pioneering team of celebrated forefathers can be found inside this experimental piece. After our successful restoration we joined only a handful of people that have had the access, time and resources to fully disassemble and service this historic clock.

Fromanteel Month Duration Longcase

The Fromanteels were a prolific family of clockmakers and the first to manufacture pendulum clocks in England in the 17th century. This development in the manufacture of pendulums for clockwork regulation in England was an innovation that advanced the accuracy of timekeeping and the industry forever. In March 2023, Alex restored this Fromanteel movement ensuring conservation practices were observed so that the responsibility of servicing this clock with such rich historic provenance was considered and sympathetic.

Austrian Mantel Clock

This ornate mantel clock with its decorative edging and enamel Arabic numerals had been inherited and laid dormant for a long period. The clock was in a broadly good condition but was overrun with dirt, dust and natural ageing. It benefited from a comprehensive clean and lubrication service to give it an excellent foundation for accuracy and longevity.

Westminster Cathedral

Westminster Cathedral

This heritage clock is hung pride of place at the entrance to Westminster Cathedral and greets everyone who enters the atmospheric building. Installed in 1924, the clock is wound weekly and requires a thorough service every 5 to 10 years as preventative maintenance in order to sustain the condition of its components and to stop any unnecessary wear. A commission from the Cumbria Clock Company, collection, removal, service and reinstallation was provided.

The Royal Courts of Justice

The Royal Courts of Justice

In August 2022 we serviced the twin dial cantilever clock at the Royal Courts that overlooks The Strand, London. Its unique semi-automatic winding system and incorporated remontoire makes this heritage clock an item of great interest in the horological community. Working on this celebrated clock ignited a feeling of connection to the rich history that these precision machines provide.
